Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have noticed a soft abnormality on my thighs that has been present for about 30 days. Initially, it was painful when pressed, but it is no longer painful. I would like to understand what this could be.
Thank you for your guidance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for sending in your question.
I can see stretch marks on the thigh and a healed boil, based on what you said (attachment removed to protect patient’s identity). The soft bump you feel is probably a leftover change from the boil that happened before. After a boil cures, it can leave behind thickening, fibrosis, or moderate swelling of the soft tissue under the skin. This may feel like a soft bump for a few weeks. As you said, it is very usual for these regions to hurt at first and then become better over time.
Folliculitis or boils on the thigh are prevalent when germs get into a hair follicle or oil gland and cause an infection. The thigh area is especially vulnerable because of the constant rubbing, sweating, and hair growth, which can break down the skin barrier and let bacteria in. Tight clothes, long walks, shaving or waxing, ingrown hairs, and small, undiscovered skin injuries may all be issues. Sweating too much also makes the environment better for bacteria to proliferate.
The stretch marks (striae) you see are not harmful and have nothing to do with your current problem. They do not hurt or make lumps; they only happen when the skin stretches.
There are no indicators of an active infection, including redness, warmth, discharge, or discomfort getting worse. This is a good sign. There is no need for any special treatment at this point. Over the next few weeks to months, the area should keep getting softer and flatter. Please do not squeeze or push the region too many times. Gentle massage and using a non-comedogenic moisturizer like a gentle moisturizer made for very sensitive skin every day might help.
If you observe new discomfort, redness, warmth, discharge, a rise in size, or boils that keep coming back, I suggest getting a medical examination in person because these things need to be looked at more closely. This seems to be a natural fluctuation in healing after a boil, so there is no need to worry.
I hope this answers your question.
Please feel free to provide us with your input, which will help us improve how we care for patients.
Thanks.
