Do hyperthyroidism medications interfere with lumpectomy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend is undergoing a lumpectomy next week to remove a cancerous tumor. He has hyperthyroidism and is taking Carbimazole medication for it. Also, he is taking Omeprazole medication for his stomach issues. Will Carbimazole and Omeprazole hinder the lumpectomy operation in any negative way? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The thyroid status of your friend should be done before the surgery so that it can be managed preoperatively.

Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism is associated with adverse perioperative outcomes and complications during and after the surgery. It can also lead to intraoperative thyroid storm. He does not have to stop any medication. He should continue taking all current medications until asked to do so. He will be assessed by the anesthesiologist and maybe a physician or endocrinologist also before your scheduled surgery and will be managed perioperatively.

I would suggest he continue all current medication. He can safely undergo scheduled procedures under an anesthesiologist's care.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
