Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My mom has stage 4 lung cancer with metastasis and a massive pleural effusion on her last chest X-ray. She has been through multiple rounds of chemotherapy, but none of it has helped. The pain is severe and is not responding to narcotics at this point.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The first thing I would ask is whether she has had mutation testing done. If not, that should be considered, as a positive result could open up targeted treatment options that chemotherapy would not have addressed.
For the pain, if narcotics are not effective, the dosage can sometimes be adjusted, or other options like nerve blocks may provide better relief. The pleural effusion should also be evaluated for drainage, as this can significantly improve both discomfort and breathing.
In addition, you may want to consult a palliative care specialist, as they focus on improving quality of life and can offer advanced pain management strategies. If her symptoms are worsening, seeking urgent medical evaluation would be important.
Please discuss these options with her treating oncologist to determine the most appropriate next steps.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
