I am 36. Are there ways to lower my lung cancer risk?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 36-year-old male. I am feeling very anxious about my health due to a family history of lung cancer. My aunt was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. So, I am extremely worried about my own risk, especially considering my lifestyle. I know I have had some risk factors like smoking (occasionally) and air pollution, and I am terrified about how this might affect me.

I desperately need guidance on how to address these risk factors and what preventive measures I should be taking right now. Please tell me;

  1. Should I be undergoing specific tests or screenings?
  2. Are there lifestyle changes or other steps I can take to lower my lung cancer risk?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

To reduce your risk of lung cancer, quit smoking entirely, as smoking is a significant risk factor. Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke and air pollutants as much as possible. Incorporate a healthy diet and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight.

Screening for lung cancer, such as low-dose CT (computed scans), is recommended for individuals at high risk, like those with a significant smoking history. A thorough physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must.

I hope this helps you.

Please feel free to follow up with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you.
