Why did my lung cancer cause shoulder and arm pain at 35?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 35-year-old female, weighing about 132 pounds. I was diagnosed with lung cancer recently. For the last few months, I had unusual shoulder pain and pain radiating to my arm, which I thought was a muscle problem, but later scans showed a tumor. Why did my lung cancer cause shoulder and arm pain at age 35? Is this because of nerve involvement or something else?
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am deeply concerned about your worries.
In some instances of lung cancer, particularly when the tumor is situated in the upper part of the lung (known as the apex), it can press on nearby nerves. This type of tumor is often referred to as a Pancoast tumor.
The upper lung area is in proximity to a group of important nerves called the brachial plexus, which supply sensation and movement to the shoulder and arm. When a tumor irritates or compresses these nerves, it can lead to shoulder pain that radiates down the arm, sometimes accompanied by numbness or weakness.
As a result, the pain may initially feel like a muscle or nerve issue, causing many patients to believe it is simply an orthopedic problem.
Therefore, your pain is likely due to nerve involvement from the tumor’s location, rather than just muscle strain. The good news is that once treatment begins, this type of pain often improves as the tumor shrinks.
I hope I have addressed all of your queries and concerns. Please feel free to follow up if you have any further questions.
Thank you.
