My last scan was two years ago. Lung cancer runs in my family. Is it hereditary? I am doing genetic testing as well, and they want to repeat the CT scan in six months. Can I do anything else to help it? I quit smoking right away, but I am a nervous wreck.

However, cancerous lung nodules can double in size within four to six months. Sometimes, cancerous nodules can take only 25 days to become double in size; again, it can take 15 months sometimes. Yes, it can be hereditary. Other causes for the formation of lung nodules are previous lung infection, inflammation, irritation, scar tissue, tobacco consumption, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, air pollution, random exposure, rheumatoid arthritis, and many more. Monitoring lung nodules periodically with CT (computed tomography) chest is the best treatment option for noncancerous nodules. So, your physician has considered it as a noncancerous condition. So, do not be worried, as nothing is confirmed yet. CT-guided biopsy is the best option to find out its etiology and whether it is cancerous or noncancerous in nature. As your physician has chosen the monitoring approach with a CT chest, so I think it may be a benign or noncancerous tumor. If it is a cancerous condition, then other symptoms of cancer like chronic cough, prolonged fever, weight loss, night sweating, loss of appetite, altered bowel habits, and many more might be present. Last of all, you can go under a CT-guided biopsy to confirm whether it is a cancerous or noncancerous nodule.
