Can a 25 y/o hold a job while going through MAC treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 25 and was recently diagnosed with MAC lung disease, and the treatment plan sounds very long and intense.

I keep wondering if a 25-year-old holds a job while going through six to twelve months of MAC treatment, because I am worried about fatigue and side effects. I do not want to lose stability financially while dealing with treatment.

  1. Can a 25-year-old hold a job while going through six to twelve months of MAC treatment?

  2. How do patients usually balance both?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Yes, many young people like yourself with MAC (mycobacterium avium complex) lung disease are able to continue working during treatment. I understand why you are worried, because hearing that treatment may continue for many months can sound alarming at first.

But in reality, most patients are not confined to bed or completely unable to function.

The first few weeks are usually the adjustment phase. Some people develop symptoms like tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, loose motions, or body weakness after starting medicines, while others tolerate them surprisingly well.

In many cases, once the body adapts and the infection starts coming under better control, patients are able to continue their routine with some modifications.

The ability to hold a job depends more on how severe the lung involvement is and what kind of work you do. Office work, remote work, academic work, or jobs with flexible timing are generally easier to continue during treatment.

Physically exhausting work, night shifts, dust exposure, or very stressful schedules can become difficult for some patients during active therapy.

I have seen young patients continue studies, jobs, and even travel locally while receiving MAC treatment. Some needed reduced working hours initially, while others continued almost normally after the first month or two.

Please do not assume that six to twelve months of treatment means your life will completely stop. MAC treatment is long mainly because the organism grows slowly, not because patients remain critically ill throughout that period.

With good nutrition, sleep, hydration, emotional support, and regular monitoring, many young patients maintain a fairly stable daily life.

Your concern regarding financial stability is completely understandable. In fact, remaining engaged with work, routine, and social interaction often helps emotionally and mentally during long treatments.

Taking things one month at a time instead of thinking about the entire duration together usually makes the process feel much more manageable.

At your age, if there is no major underlying lung destruction or another serious illness, there is a good possibility of balancing treatment and employment together with proper medical guidance.

Hope I have addressed all of your queries and concerns.

Do follow up whenever needed.

Thank you.
