Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 35 and was diagnosed with Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease a few months ago after nearly a year of coughing, fatigue, and repeated chest infections. The antibiotics seem to be helping somewhat, but the treatment timeline sounds incredibly long.
That is why I keep asking, How long does treatment for Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease usually last? Hearing that therapy may continue for well over a year caught me completely off guard.
Some days my breathing feels noticeably better, while other days I am exhausted just walking across a parking lot. I have also started worrying about medication side effects since I am taking multiple drugs at once.
I do not want to stop treatment early and risk making things worse, but I am struggling to understand what a normal recovery timeline looks like.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
That is right. Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection treatment can continue for a longer time. Having said that, with the right approach, guidance, and patience, it can be successful.
We continue the treatment for 12 months after the sputum cultures come out negative. Mostly, it is given for 1.5 to 2 years, but in extensive disease, treatment can last longer.
Recovery from the infection occurs slowly over time. You may feel improvement in cough within three months, and your energy levels are expected to improve by six months.
About the side effects you asked about, there are three main medicines, and each of them has different side effects. Side effects happen in some people and do not occur in others.
With Ethambutol, eye testing is regularly required. The antibiotic Rifampicin is known to cause irritation to the stomach and liver. Azithromycin may cause hearing impairment and vomiting.
The discontinuation of the regimen leads to insufficient elimination of the mycobacterium. The secret to the success of treatment lies in sufficient knowledge, patience, follow-ups, and medication compliance.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer.
