Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 66 years old and was recently diagnosed with MAC lung disease after a CT scan showed bronchiectasis and a positive sputum culture. I also have a chronic cough and have lost about 9 pounds in the last three months.
My doctor mentioned starting triple antibiotic therapy.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I have read your query and understand your concern.
In MAC lung disease (mycobacterium avium complex) with underlying bronchiectasis, treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics taken together. This is a long-term treatment. Typically, therapy continues for at least 12 months after sputum cultures become negative, and overall duration may be around 18 to 24 months depending on response.
With all these, there definitely will be side effects, but they are easily manageable. Common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, and loose stools. Some medications may affect vision, so regular eye check-ups are important. Liver function and hearing are also monitored during treatment.
Regarding recovery, many patients respond well to treatment, but recurrence can occur, especially when bronchiectasis is present. Regular follow-up and sputum testing are important even after completing therapy.
MAC lung disease is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. It is commonly found in the environment, such as soil and water.
You can continue light activities like walking, as this helps maintain lung health. However, it is advisable to avoid heavy dust exposure and take precautions in environments with poor air quality.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
