Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My nephew's school just sent out an alert that a student has come down with the measles virus. The kid is fully vaccinated but we are afraid of her catching the infection. How to prevent measles? Is it a serious disease?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I went through your query.
Localized measles outbreaks can still pose a significant threat to the general public, especially in areas with low vaccination rates. Measles is highly contagious and outbreaks can spread quickly among unvaccinated individuals, including infants who are too young to be vaccinated and those with weakened immune systems.
Even though measles was largely controlled in many parts of the world due to vaccination programs, recent years have seen a resurgence of cases, partly due to vaccine hesitancy and gaps in vaccination coverage. This resurgence underscores the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to prevent outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations.
In addition to causing illness and complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis, measles outbreaks can strain healthcare systems and resources. They also disrupt daily life, including school attendance and work productivity. Therefore, even localized outbreaks require swift public health responses, including vaccination campaigns, contact tracing, and public awareness initiatives, to contain the spread of the virus and protect public health.
Hope it helps.
Thank you.
