What are the ways to manage symptoms of measles?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 30-year-old guy, and I am worried because I think I might have measles. A few days ago, I started getting a fever, runny nose, and a terrible cough. Yesterday, I noticed little red spots started appearing all over my face and body, resembling a rash. I remember getting the measles vaccine as a kid, but I am not sure if I ever got the full series of shots. I have been reading about measles online, and it says it is a contagious viral disease. I am concerned because I have a weak immune system from a medical condition. What are the next steps I should take?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Measles is indeed a highly contagious viral disease. The symptoms you described are characteristic of measles. Initial symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red, and watery eyes. After a few days, a red, blotchy rash appears, usually starting on the face and then spreading to the rest of the body. Small white spots with a bluish center on a red background, found inside the mouth, are a key indicator of measles.
It is important to get physically examined by a doctor immediately. A blood test or a swab of your throat or nasal passages to confirm the diagnosis of measles. To prevent spreading the virus to others, isolate yourself at home. Stay well-hydrated and watch for signs of complications, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, a severe headache, confusion, or a persistent high fever.
Check your vaccination records to see if you received the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. If you have been exposed to measles and are not fully vaccinated, your doctor might recommend a dose of the MMR vaccine as post-exposure prophylaxis.
A regular follow-up with your treating doctor is a must
