Is surgery the only option to treat fibroids associated with bleeding and cramps in a menopausal woman?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 52 years old and in the menopause stage. I have suffered from moderate to severe bleeding for three days, along with cramps. Unbearable pain is present. I also have fibroids. Since last year, my periods have been very irregular. Is surgery the sole treatment option or is there medicine that might lessen and eliminate the fibroids? I am asking because I have a crack in my lumbar spine and want to avoid surgery as much as possible. For a benign parotidectomy, I just underwent major surgery. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Surgery is always the best option if you have uterine fibroids and painful, heavy menstrual bleeding. Still, if you would prefer to try a medication first, I suggest a selective progesterone receptor modulator like Ulipristal acetate for one month. It can lessen bleeding while also preventing the spread of fibroids. However, please consult a gynecologist, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
