Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been on my period for about three weeks. It is really concerning, and my sister wants me to get checked out, but I feel like I am fine, but I do not know why this is happening. What should I do?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Having your period for three weeks straight with heavy bleeding is not normal, and it is important to get checked. Even if you feel okay otherwise, prolonged bleeding at your age can have several causes that need evaluation.
At your age, hormonal imbalance can occur as your cycles are often irregular while your body is still adjusting after starting menstruation, and sometimes this can cause prolonged bleeding.
Ovulation problems can occur if your body is not ovulating regularly, which can lead to long or heavy periods.
Bleeding disorders can be present in some teenagers and may make bleeding heavier or longer.
Other causes are rare, but growths in the uterus or thyroid problems can cause prolonged bleeding. Heavy bleeding for three weeks can lead to low iron or anemia, even if you feel okay now. It is not something that will usually stop on its own without evaluation.
See a doctor soon, ideally a gynecologist or pediatric or adolescent doctor. They may check your blood count, hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound to see the uterus. Track how much you are bleeding (pads or tampons per day) to help the doctor.
This is not unusual for young women, but it should not be ignored. Getting checked will make sure nothing serious is going on and help you stop the prolonged bleeding safely. Prolonged menorrhagia (heavy, extended menstrual bleeding) is likely due to hormonal immaturity, but requires medical evaluation to rule out other causes.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
