What are the benefits of exercising during menstruation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32 year old woman. Last year, I had a little irregularity in my menstruation. However, I started following a few exercises and now my menstruation is regular and I do not have any issues. But is it safe to follow exercises during menstruation? As I have little difficulty in performing exercises during the first two days, is it okay to skip? What kind of exercise/yoga is best during menstruation?

Please help

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

There are no medical contraindications for exercising while you are on your period. Instead, exercising will help to relieve some of the symptoms like cramps, bloating, breast tenderness that occur during periods.

Brisk walking, upper body exercise like stretching and yoga are good exercises to do while on your period.

Avoid strenuous exercises like running as these might add additional stress to you and increase the cramps
