Can my wife, with irregular periods, get pregnant safely?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

My wife is 31 years old, and we have been trying to have a baby for eight months but have not had any success. Her periods are very irregular; sometimes they come every 35 days, other times every 45 days, so it is hard to know when she is ovulating. She is healthy otherwise, but I am worried about her age and the irregular cycles.

What can we do to improve our chances of getting pregnant? Should we try a few more things on our own first, or is it time to see a fertility doctor? How long should we wait before getting medical help?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Trying to have a baby can be both exciting and stressful, especially when your wife has irregular periods. Cycles that are 35 to 45 days apart may mean she is not ovulating regularly, which can make it harder to conceive. This could be due to conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), thyroid problems, stress, weight changes, or other hormone issues. There are things you can try at home first. Start by tracking ovulation using ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), though they may not always be accurate with irregular cycles. Try basal body temperature (BBT) tracking, ovulation apps, or digital hormone monitors like Mira or Oova.

Living a healthy lifestyle is also important; maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking, too much caffeine, and alcohol can all help. Your wife should also start taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid at least a month before conception. While couples under 35 are usually advised to try for 12 months before seeing a fertility specialist, irregular cycles are a good reason to get help sooner. A specialist can check her hormone levels, see if she is ovulating, look at her ovarian reserve, do an ultrasound, and check your sperm as well. Irregular periods do not mean infertility, but they can delay pregnancy. Seeing a doctor early can save time, bring peace of mind, and sometimes lead to simple treatments that increase the chances of getting pregnant.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
