Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 34-year-old woman and I have been facing irregular menstruation for the past four months and I have been having mood swings too. I get irritated at times and sometimes, I feel sad and depressed for no reason. Do I have any hormonal disorders? How do I find the cause? I would like to regularize my menstruation. Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am here to help you get the best medical advice.
It must be actually very disturbing to have irregular periods and mood disorders. Irregular periods can occur due to a number of reasons like improper eating habits, altered diet, lack of exercise, changes in daily routine, thyroid disorders, stress, or weight gain. All these alter the hormonal balance and the menstrual cycle.
So, if you suffer from any of the above causes, then please get yourself checked. An ultrasound will help in checking the cause of irregular periods. Birth control pills might help in regularizing your period but that needs to be taken only if all the tests are done and are not significant. Also, I suggest you kindly do a urine pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy if you are sexually active.
Coming to mood disorders, feeling depressed has less to do with the menstrual cycle. Adapting to a healthy diet and doing your favorite hobbies will help you deal with the issue of depression. Also, you can obtain help from a psychologist.
I hope you got answers to all the queries that you had.
Thank you.
