What causes no periods for a year in a 21-year-old woman?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been suffering from an irregular period cycle since my first menstruation. I am 21 years old at present. In my teens, I visited a gynecologist, and after all the hormonal tests, it was found that I had low progesterone levels and a hemorrhagic cyst in my right ovary. I was prescribed Femitrone and Femicordial Forte. After taking them for about two to three months, I started having regular periods. Even after I stopped taking the medication, my periods continued to occur at one-month intervals. However, it has been a year since I have had a period again.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition. Do not worry; I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed amenorrhea due to a hormonal imbalance that is caused by the hemorrhagic ovarian cyst.

Any history of headache, blurred vision, or breast milk discharge?

I can see you have a low progesterone level and possibly high estrogen. Please, I will advise you to repeat the pelvic scan; let me know the size of the ovarian cyst if it is something to go for surgery. Meanwhile, please kindly take the following for the menses:

  1. One tablet of Medroxyprogesterone 10 mg with food daily for one month.

  2. One tablet of Norethisterone 5 mg with food daily for one month.

  3. One tablet of letrozole 5 mg with food daily for one month.

If your symptoms persist , schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat , phone or video consultation.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
