Is metabolic surgery safe for me with diabetes at age 40?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old man with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. My doctor suggested metabolic surgery to help improve my health and reduce my reliance on medications.

I have done some research, but I am still not sure which type of surgery - sleeve gastrectomy or bypass - is better for diabetes control. I’m also worried about how hard it will be to stick to the diet afterward.

  1. Is there a big difference in success rates between the surgeries?
  2. Can they help reverse diabetes, or is that temporary?

I would love to hear from people who have been through it and done well.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Both sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgeries are performed for distinct reasons, which are influenced by an individual's height, weight, and BMI (body mass index). Therefore, I kindly request that you provide your weight and height. Furthermore, these surgical procedures have the potential to reverse conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
