How to overcome opioid use disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am reaching out for advice on behalf of my neighbor, a 33-year-old man who has been struggling with opioid use disorder. He is mainly into methadone. Can you provide insights into the potential side effects of these? Additionally, we are concerned about the risk of drug overdose, and it would be helpful to understand how to mitigate this risk. Considering his health history and symptoms related to opioid use, what approach would you recommend for managing his condition and promoting a safe recovery? Any guidance on available support systems or therapies that can complement medication-based treatments would be greatly appreciated in our effort to help him overcome opioid use disorder. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Actually, if he is used to opioids and it was prescribed by doctors, then you should not be worried because doctors keep watching and monitoring the drug use. They change dosage accordingly. This drug has side effects of overdose, like weight gain and depression, and it can cause withdrawal symptoms. So, to discontinue it, the doctor starts decreasing the dosage. Then, the doctor gives it on alternative days and then stops it slowly. What is the dosage of opioids he is taking currently?

If there is anything else, please let me know.

Thank you.
