Does Miconazole work well for a yeast infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I believe that I have a yeast infection and used Monistat 1. I think that it has cleared up as my discharge is no longer white and chunky, however, my anus hurts very bad when I poop. My lips are swollen and burned. I am overall very uncomfortable. Currently, I am taking Zoloft 25 mg and birth control patches. Kindly help.

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Thanks for sharing all those details. It helps build a clearer picture. Here is a breakdown of what might be happening and what to do next:

What could be going on:

  1. Residual irritation from Monistat (Miconazole): Monistat 1 is a high-dose treatment and can sometimes cause local irritation, burning, swelling, or pain in the vulva and anus. This may explain the swollen lips and anal pain, especially if it began soon after use.

  2. Extended yeast infection (perianal candidiasis): Yeast infections can spread to the anal area, especially if left untreated for a while. Pain when pooping and anal discomfort could suggest this.

  3. Secondary bacterial infection or hemorrhoids: If you strain during bowel movements or the skin is broken, a bacterial infection or even hemorrhoids may be contributing to the pain.

  4. Allergic reaction or sensitivity: Some people are sensitive to ingredients in Monistat, which could trigger swelling and burning.

What you should do:

  1. Soothe the area: Use cool compresses on the vulva to reduce swelling and burning. Apply plain petroleum jelly or zinc oxide cream around the anus to protect the skin. Avoid soaps or scented products.
  2. Consider an oral antifungal: If things do not improve in 24 to 48 hours, ask your doctor about Fluconazole (Diflucan), a single-dose oral pill that sometimes works better and causes less irritation than vaginal creams.
  3. See a healthcare provider promptly if pain worsens or spreads, you are noticing discharge from the anus or cracks or sores, you develop fever or chills and symptoms persist beyond three days after Monistat.
  4. Support gut and vaginal health: Consider taking a probiotic (especially one with Lactobacillus strains). Drink lots of water, and avoid tight clothing, douching, or scented hygiene products.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me know if I need to assist further.

Thank you.
