What causes minor bleeding after taking Mifepristone?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am in my early pregnancy and have not done any scans yet, but four days ago, I took Mifepristone only and suddenly vomited. Since yesterday evening, I have been experiencing minor bleeding.

Is this due to yesterday’s heavy and fast walking and due to intercourse?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Since you are in early pregnancy and have taken Mifepristone without completing the full medical abortion process (which typically includes Misoprostol). Your current symptoms vomiting, minor bleeding, and concerns about physical activity and intercourse need to be evaluated carefully.

Possible explanations for your symptoms:

Mifepristone effects:

  1. Mifepristone alone is not enough to complete an abortion. It blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for maintaining pregnancy, but without Misoprostol, the process may not be completed properly.

  2. Some people experience mild bleeding after taking Mifepristone, but without Misoprostol, the pregnancy might continue.

Physical activity and intercourse:

  1. Heavy walking or intercourse can sometimes cause mild bleeding in early pregnancy, especially if the cervix is sensitive or irritated.

  2. However, this bleeding alone does not necessarily mean that a miscarriage is happening.

Incomplete abortion or ongoing pregnancy:

  1. If you have not taken Misoprostol yet, the abortion is likely incomplete or has not started properly.

  2. If the pregnancy progresses, you may need a scan to confirm its status.

What you should do next:

  1. Do not take more medication without medical guidance.

  2. If you wish to continue the pregnancy, you should see a doctor immediately to check if the baby is still developing normally.

  3. If you want to proceed with termination, you will need Misoprostol to complete the abortion, but this should be done under medical supervision to avoid complications.

  4. Get a scan (ultrasound) as soon as possible. A scan will confirm whether the pregnancy is still viable or if it is in the process of ending.

  5. Monitor your symptoms: If bleeding increases significantly or if you experience severe pain, fever, dizziness, or large blood clots, seek urgent medical care.

  6. Consult a doctor or reproductive health specialist: Since you have taken only Mifepristone, a doctor can guide you on the next safest steps based on your decision regarding the pregnancy.

Would you like information on what to expect next, depending on whether you want to continue or end the pregnancy?

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
