What work accommodations can I request for migraines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have joined an office lately, and because of my migraine, I am finding it tough to manage a full day of work. I am 27 years old, and working with a computer almost throughout the day appears to be triggering the migraines.

I do not wish to appear as someone who is being difficult or trying to get some extra favors.

Can you please let me know how I can ask for accommodations without sounding like I am trying to make a fuss?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is unfortunate to learn that you have migraines at the very time you are making an effort to adapt to a new job and leave a good impression. It should be noted that many patients suffering from migraines have noticed that they can experience attacks as a result of work in offices because of a lot of factors.

The request for accommodation in your workplace does not mean that you need any favors. The main aim is to work efficiently despite your health problem.

Work accommodations depend on your individual needs and could be as follows:

  • A glare filter should be used to block the light reflection.

  • It is possible to adjust the brightness, colors, and fonts of the screen.

  • Take a break from the screen every hour.

  • The option to take a break when a migraine strikes.

  • Working in a less noisy environment or in low light.

  • Wearing noise-cancelling headphones if necessary.

  • Periodically working at home, if the job allows it and your boss permits.

Moreover, being well-hydrated, consuming regularly, and not skipping breaks can decrease the risk of many migraine triggers.

In case you have migraines frequently enough or the attacks interfere with your daily life in any way, it is highly recommended to consult your healthcare professional on ways of preventing them. Migraine prevention proves effective enough to lower the number of attacks and their intensity.

I hope that this is helpful for you.

Best regards.
