Can milk thistle be given for elevated SGOT and SGPT levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The doctor has prescribed S-Adenosyl methionine tablets to one of my friends. Can I also give her a milk thistle supplement alongside this? Please note that she has elevated SGPT (serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase) and SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase) levels. I would appreciate your suggestions.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to assist you with your health queries.

I have read about your concern in detail. It is important that you consult your surgeon first. Monitoring the levels of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) is crucial. I recommend avoiding milk thistle supplements for now.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
