What are the side effects of Minoxidil?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 34 year old male. I handle a lot of stress daily at work and home. I could not take care of myself. Recently, I have been noticing that my hair keeps thinning, mainly near the forehead and center of the head. I am afraid that I will lose my hair soon. I was searching on the internet, then I got to know about Minoxidil. Is it safe? Can it prevent hair loss and promote hair growth? Can I revert hair loss with Minoxidil? Are there any side effects of this medication?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Minoxidil is a treatment for hair loss. It promotes hair growth and prevents further hair thinning. Minoxidil is a topical medication used to treat androgenetic alopecia in men and women. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, and it widens the blood vessels and improves blood flow to the hair follicles. This increased blood flow can help stimulate hair follicles and prolong the growth phase of hair. Minoxidil helps regrow hair, with mild to moderate hair loss. Minoxidil is typically applied twice daily to the scalp in the areas experiencing hair thinning.

Consistent use is crucial for effectiveness. Results can be seen after four to six months of regular use. Here are some side effects:

Scalp irritation, redness, itching, and dryness at the application site, unwanted hair growth, dizziness, and an initial increase in hair shedding, which usually subsides as the hair growth cycle adjusts.

Hair regrowth achieved with Minoxidil can be lost if the treatment is discontinued.

Consult a dermatologist or trichologist before starting Minoxidil, improving diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and avoiding stress. Some other treatments such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, low-level laser therapy, or hair transplant surgery might be considered.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Thank you.
