Is my overbite and jaw cracking at 23 concerning?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 23 years old, and I have jaw alignment issues. I can crack my jaw whenever I want, and it appears as though I have a big overbite even when I do not. My side profiles also look different on each side.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

It sounds as though you may be experiencing concerns related to bite discrepancies, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function, or underlying skeletal imbalance.

It is worth noting that genuine facial asymmetry is best assessed from the frontal view rather than by comparing each side profile in isolation.

Side views can sometimes exaggerate or distort differences, while a frontal analysis provides a clearer and more reliable picture of overall balance and proportion.

At the age of 23, and given the combination of functional issues such as cracking and the appearance of an overbite, along with aesthetic concerns like uneven side profiles, it is important to have the jaw joints carefully assessed.

These joints play a central role in both function and appearance, and they should be evaluated during movement and with appropriate imaging rather than relying on photographs alone.

A thorough clinical examination, supported by radiographs or 3D (three-dimensional) scans, will help determine whether the problem is primarily dental, skeletal, or joint-related.

I strongly encourage you to seek a comprehensive evaluation with a specialist in orthodontics or maxillofacial surgery so that a clear diagnosis can be established and the most suitable treatment options discussed.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
