Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a miscarriage two months ago and was given Misoprostol to help flush it out. Later, I started experiencing light bleeding, which sometimes became heavy. I did an ultrasound scan, and the results showed that my womb is clear with nothing left inside. The bleeding was said to be due to clots. I have taken Mefenamic acid to help stop it, but I am still waiting for positive results.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am really sorry you are going through this. After a miscarriage, it is not uncommon for some women to experience irregular or prolonged bleeding for a few weeks as the body readjusts hormonally and the uterine lining heals.
Since your ultrasound confirmed that your womb is clear, it is reassuring that there are no retained products of conception causing the bleeding.
However, if the bleeding continues to be heavy, forms clots, or is accompanied by pelvic pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge, it could suggest an infection or hormonal imbalance that needs medical attention.
Sometimes, after using Misoprostol, the uterus can take a while to return to its normal rhythm, and hormone levels such as estrogen and progesterone may fluctuate, causing breakthrough bleeding or spotting.
Mefenamic acid (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) can help reduce bleeding and cramps. Still, suppose the bleeding persists beyond a few weeks or becomes heavier.
In that case, your doctor may order blood tests to check your hemoglobin, thyroid function, or reproductive hormones and possibly prescribe medications to regulate your cycle, such as hormonal therapy.
It is also advisable to avoid sexual intercourse and tampons until the bleeding fully stops to prevent infection. Rest, hydration, and a balanced diet rich in iron can help your body recover.
If you are trying to conceive again, it’s usually recommended to wait until at least one or two normal menstrual cycles have occurred so that your uterine lining is ready for a healthy pregnancy.
Please follow up with your gynecologist for further evaluation to ensure your recovery is complete and to discuss any treatment if the bleeding continues.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
