Why am I getting recurrent miscarriage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

At first, I ended up with a miscarriage in eight months. It was a natural one when the baby's movement decreased, and I was unable to determine it. Then, after eight months, I conceived. That also ended with a miscarriage in a month's time. I have gone through D and C.

Now, I have been trying to conceive for the past three months after D and C, but I am unable to get pregnant. I have hyperthyroidism and have been taking the medicine Thyronorm 100 mcg for 2 years after my first case. Please explain why it is happening.

What do I need to do to conceive again?

My age is 30. I had all other tests, like rubella and other virus tests, and all reports are normal.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Three months is a short duration for conception to occur. The chance of pregnancy after trying for six months is 70 percent. You can safely try naturally for another six months. There is very little likelihood of there being any pathology preventing pregnancy.

If conception does not occur in another three months, you need to undergo at least one mid-cycle ultrasound (to know endometrial thickness) and one tubal patency test, as dilation and curettage (D and C) can affect both.

Apart from that, investigations for repeated miscarriage, especially antiphospholipid syndrome (an autoimmune hypercoagulable state leading to fetal loss), should be done to know the cause and prevent recurrence (repeat miscarriage). Kindly get it done if it has not already been done.

Please keep TSH levels (thyroid-stimulating hormone) in the normal range by taking the proper dose of Thyroxine and checking the same every six to 12 months. Hypothyroidism can affect a baby's brain development.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
