What causes a missed period with negative pregnancy tests?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female. I am relatively healthy and have never missed a period before. I am about a week late for my period and am currently sexually active, but every pregnancy test taken so far has been negative.

I have had no recent changes, no stress, no weight gain or loss, no changes in eating habits, and nothing that has come up as a possible cause when I searched for what it could be. I know I am not extremely late, but I have never missed a period before or been more than a day late. I have been sexually active for a while, and my periods have been regular up until now.

I am not sure what is going on or if I could be pregnant even with negative tests.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Thank you for sharing all those details. It is understandable to feel anxious when your period is late for the first time, especially while being sexually active.

Here is what to keep in mind:

Pregnancy tests:

  1. Home pregnancy tests are usually very accurate if done correctly, especially after a missed period.
  2. If you tested very early (such as just a few days after your missed period), the hormone levels might not be high enough yet to detect pregnancy.
  3. It is a good idea to repeat the test a few days from now, preferably with the first morning urine for better accuracy.

Other reasons for a missed or late period:

Even without obvious stress, weight changes, or illness, your cycle can be affected by:

  1. Minor hormonal fluctuations (especially at your age, cycles can vary a bit).
  2. Mild thyroid imbalances or other hormonal issues (rare if healthy, but possible).
  3. Physical activity changes or an undetected mild illness.
  4. Natural variability: sometimes a cycle can be a bit longer or shorter.

When to see a doctor:

  1. If your period does not start within the next week or two.
  2. If you continue to get negative pregnancy tests but still have no period.
  3. If you experience any unusual symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs.

It is unlikely that you are pregnant if multiple tests are negative, but repeating the test in a few days is a good idea. A late period once in a while can happen naturally without a clear cause. If it persists or you have other symptoms, seeing a healthcare provider to check hormone levels or other potential causes is recommended.

I hope this helps.

Please let us know if you have any further queries. We would be happy to answer.

Thank you.
