Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a missing tooth (the right canine when I am facing someone) due to an accident and discoloration of my two front teeth (the central incisors).
I consulted a dentist who recommended two procedures: crowning the front teeth and placing a dental implant for the missing canine. However, I also have an overbite that I want to correct with braces.
I am seeking a second opinion on which procedure should be done first. Should I undergo braces first and then proceed with crowning and the dental implant, or should I complete the crowning and implant treatment first and consider braces later?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I have read your query and understand your concerns.
When planning multiple dental procedures involving orthodontics or braces, the treatment sequence is crucial.
In most cases, orthodontic treatment is completed before permanent prosthodontic work, such as crowns and implants, but after basic restorative procedures like fillings and root canal treatments.
Based on the photo provided (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), the missing tooth appears to be a lateral incisor rather than a canine, with some spacing between the teeth and a shallow bite. In such situations, orthodontic treatment is usually recommended as the first step.
Braces or aligners can help close or redistribute the space, correct the shallow bite, and create adequate room for a future implant in the lateral incisor position. Placing an implant before orthodontic treatment may result in improper positioning, as implants are fixed in the bone and cannot be moved with braces.
Once orthodontic treatment has aligned the teeth and established a proper bite, the implant can be placed in the ideal position for long-term function and aesthetics. This approach ensures better stability and a more natural appearance.
After orthodontic treatment and implant placement, the discolored central incisors can be restored with crowns or veneers. This allows the restorations to match the final tooth alignment and shade, resulting in the best functional and cosmetic outcome.
I hope this information is helpful.
Thanks and regards.
