What over-the-counter medications clear thick yellow mucus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past couple of days, I have been blowing my nose a lot. I have had light throat pain, and my eyes were itchy, so I assumed it was allergies. I took some Claritin (Loratadine) and Afrin (Oxymetazoline), and it sort of helped. But this morning, my mucus was thick and yellow; now it is back to clear. I just need to know what over-the-counter medicine I can take.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

From the symptoms that you have mentioned, it looks like you do have an allergy. Since you mentioned that the secretion is now clear, it is most likely not a bacterial infection.

You can continue taking the antihistamine you are already using, Claritin (Loratadine 10 mg), one tablet every 24 hours (maximum dose).

I would like to tell you can only take this if:

  1. You are not allergic to this drug.

  2. You do not have any comorbidities such as liver or kidney disease, or phenylketonuria.

  1. Stop using it immediately if you notice any allergic reaction.

Cough, drowsiness, headache, nausea, and dry mouth can occur. Discontinue the medication and seek medical help if you experience irregular or fast heartbeat, stomach pain, seizures, dark-colored urine, vomiting, or any signs of an allergic reaction. These side effects are uncommon.

Afrin (Oxymetazoline), used for nasal decongestion, provides temporary relief. It can be used, but do not use it for more than three consecutive days, as it can worsen nasal congestion (a condition known as rebound congestion).

You can also try steam inhalation to relieve nasal congestion. Try to identify and avoid potential allergens (for example, dust, pollen) to prevent further episodes. If your symptoms do not improve, please visit your physician.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
