How are light sensitivity symptoms managed in MS?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 51-year-old brother has multiple sclerosis (MS) and has been experiencing unusual patterns of light sensitivity. He works as a professional cinematographer and has recently noticed that certain lighting conditions unexpectedly trigger neurological symptoms. These visual disturbances are making it especially difficult for him to continue filming.

Is this a common issue with MS?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for reaching out, and I understand your concerns completely.

Light sensitivity, also known as photophobia, and unusual visual disturbances are fairly standard in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), although the specific patterns and triggers can vary from person to person.

MS can cause optic nerve inflammation and affect areas of the brain involved in vision. This may lead to symptoms such as blurred vision, color dimming, or increased sensitivity to light. MS also raises the risk of migraines, which can further contribute to these visual symptoms.

Bright or flashing lights can exacerbate these issues, especially for those working in cinematography, where lighting is constantly changing and sometimes intense.

There is also a condition called Uhthoff’s phenomenon, which refers to the temporary worsening of MS symptoms due to heat or physical exertion. Exposure to hot filming lights or strenuous activity on set might be triggering or amplifying your brother's symptoms.

Here are a few steps that may help manage his light sensitivity:

  1. Modify lighting: Use soft, indirect lighting or diffusers to reduce glare and harsh light exposure.

  2. Try optical aids: Use specialized filters or lenses blocking specific light wavelengths.

  3. Avoid flickering lights: Stick to stable, non-flickering lighting sources whenever possible.

  4. Take regular breaks: Schedule short breaks during filming, about 10 minutes every hour, to rest his eyes. Cool compresses or even cucumber slices over closed eyes may help soothe irritation.

  5. Control temperature: Prevent overheating by using fans or air conditioning to keep the environment comfortable.

  6. Review medications: If he is on steroid therapy and still experiencing these issues, his neurologist may need to reassess the dosage.

  7. Consult a neurologist: If symptoms worsen, get an MRI to check for new lesions and follow up with your neurologist promptly.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please feel free to reach out again if you need more guidance.

Thank you.
