Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 53 years old. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years back and I have been on medication (Gilenya) since then. Recently I have had blurred vision and feel very weak. I have been feeling anxious and depressed lately. I have heard about alternative therapies like acupuncture or yoga. Do you think these could be beneficial for my MS?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing these challenges. Blurred vision and weakness can sometimes indicate a worsening of MS (multiple sclerosis) symptoms or a potential side effect of Gilenya (Fingolimod), so it is crucial to discuss these symptoms with your neurologist as soon as possible. Anxiety and depression are also common in MS and can be addressed with a combination of medical, psychological, and lifestyle approaches.
Both acupuncture and yoga have shown potential benefits for MS, particularly in managing symptoms like pain, fatigue, stress, and mental well-being.
Acupuncture
Potential benefits:
May reduce pain, spasticity, and fatigue.
Promotes relaxation and may help with anxiety and depression.
Some people report improvements in overall energy levels and sleep.
What to consider:
Look for a licensed and experienced acupuncturist familiar with MS.
It is generally safe but communicate openly about your symptoms to ensure the treatment is tailored to your needs.
Yoga
Potential benefits:
Improves flexibility, balance, and strength.
Helps reduce stress and anxiety through mindful breathing and relaxation.
Enhances mood and energy levels over time.
What to consider:
Join a class or instructor experienced in adapting yoga for people with MS.
Start with gentle practices like Hatha or restorative yoga.
Other alternative approaches to consider:
Meditation and mindfulness: These practices can help manage stress, anxiety, and depression, which may positively impact MS symptoms.
Massage therapy: Can alleviate muscle tension and improve relaxation.
Dietary adjustments: An anti-inflammatory diet (like the Mediterranean diet) may support overall health.
Important notes
Combination with traditional medicine: Alternative therapies are best used alongside your prescribed treatment. They do not replace disease-modifying drugs like Fingolimod.
Monitoring symptoms: Any worsening of vision or significant changes in weakness should be promptly addressed by your healthcare provider. These could indicate MS-related complications or treatment side effects.
Support for depression and anxiety: Consider speaking with a therapist who has experience working with chronic illness. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and support groups can be especially helpful.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
