What tests can confirm a diagnosis of myocardial infarction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

As someone in my family is at risk of myocardial infarction, I would like to be informed about the diagnostic tests performed during a potential heart attack emergency. Could you clarify the purpose and reliability of tests like angiography and cardiac biomarker assays in quickly diagnosing MI? How do these tests guide treatment decisions in an emergency situation?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

In the case of the symptoms of myocardial infarction or MI (heart attack), I suggest performing an immediate ECG (electrocardiogram).

If the symptoms are also suggestive of aortic dissection, perform an immediate chest X-ray. If troponins are negative but still have symptoms suggestive of MI, I suggest you do serial troponins.

If serial ECG and serial troponins are negative and the patient is stable, then rest perfusion imaging is performed.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
