Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 32-year-old woman with two children (3.5 years and 13 years old), both delivered via cesarean section. I had a routine pap smear precisely three years ago. Today, when washing and self-examining (I have anxiety, so will check my body often), I felt a small bump on my cervix. It was smooth, and maybe 3 mm in size. I have just started my menstruation. Is this an expected finding? Should I consult a doctor as soon as possible?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I surely understand your concern and would try my best to solve your query. Based on the details you mentioned, I do not feel any urgent need to visit your doctor (gynecologist) immediately. The smooth bump you are feeling over the surface of your cervix could be an enlarged nabothian follicle (Nabothian cyst), which is a normal finding. However, to confirm this, your doctor will have to examine your cervix by speculum examination. If you are not having any unhealthy or blood-stained discharge or bleeding or spotting after intercourse, it is highly unlikely that it could be a cancerous change that you are feeling.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Please revert in case of any further doubts.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I have read about these Nabothian cysts, and I wondered if they were common (for women my age). I do not exhibit any other symptoms; the only thing I can think of is that my cycle is usually around 26 to 27 days but sometimes (like now) 23 to 24 days. This happens every few months; it is usually quite regular. I still breastfeed my youngest daughter (she is 3.5 years old and has autism; breastfeeding is a significant source of comfort for her), so maybe it is hormonal. Is this something to worry about?

Thank you so much again; you have put my mind a bit more at rest.

Kind regards.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

A cycle length variation of 28 plus or minus seven days is fine. Also, the Nabothian follicle or cyst findings are pretty common. There is nothing to worry about your cycle length at all. Not every woman gets a perfect 28 days cycle. Only about 3 to 5% of women who have regular cycles get it at an interval of 28 days, so a variation of 22 to 35 days is normal and nothing much to worry about. Stay calm and lead a healthy life.

Take care.
