Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What makes a narcissist and how to tame them to weigh in? What causes this behavior and what type of narcissists among us can do to curb our impulses, specifically the need to be the center of attention at parties, work, or other public settings?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns. Narcissistic individuals have exacerbated their sense of self-importance, lack of empathy towards others, and deep need for admiration. These dysfunctional behaviors are seen in all domains like social, personal, or work life. Narcissists can be psycho-educated regarding their altered behaviors. Cognitive therapy can be employed while dealing with narcissism. First of all, a rapport should be built in which they start believing in one individual. Once rapport is built then he or she should be made aware of the incidents where malfunctional behaviors were observed. This is not an easy task because this might backfire and make them angry. Once after multiple tries malfunction behaviors and altered thoughts were identified then the individual is requested to correct these distorted behaviors and to imply these changes in day-to-day life. This will help in controlling narcissistic impulses. But the individuals with narcissistic personality disorder are difficult to treat. They will never accept that their behavior was dysfunctional. They will only blame others and will not get ready for any sort of treatment medicinal or psychological. I hope I have cleared your doubts.

Thank you.
