My daughter has light bleeding from the nose. How to manage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

There is a small amount of bleeding from the nose, an hour after a hit to the bridge of the nose, for my daughter. I have applied pressure for 10 minutes. No other symptoms except pain on the bridge of the nose.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I know this can feel worrying, but from what you have described, this sounds like a minor nose injury. After a hit to the bridge of the nose, it is quite common for small blood vessels inside the nose to keep oozing for a while, even an hour later.

The good news is that your daughter does not have any warning symptoms, and the pain is only where she was hit. I suggest that you do the following now:

  1. Sit upright and lean slightly forward (do not tilt your head back), gently pinch the soft part of her nose just below the bony bridge, and hold it firmly without letting go for a full 15 to 20 minutes. Try not to check during that time.

  2. You can also place a cold pack or wrapped ice over the bridge of your daughter’s nose to help with pain and swelling.

  3. Avoid blowing the nose or touching it for several hours, as that can restart the bleeding.

In most children, this is enough for the bleeding to stop.

If the bleeding continues after repeated pressure, becomes heavier, or if you notice increasing pain, swelling, a crooked-looking nose, trouble breathing through the nose, or bleeding from both nostrils with worsening pain, you should see a doctor to make sure there is no fracture or a blood collection inside the nose.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
