Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have several small, round, white, firm lesions inside my nostril near the entrance of the nose. I do not have any pain, swelling, or bleeding.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
From what you describe, the small, round, white, firm lesions inside the nostril near the entrance, without pain, swelling, or bleeding, are often benign. They may represent fibrous papules or milia.
Fibrous papules are harmless, dome-shaped, firm, non-tender nodules that appear on or near the nose. They have no malignant potential, though a biopsy may be required for confirmation. Milia are tiny keratin-filled cysts that appear as white bumps and usually cause no discomfort or symptoms.
There are a few other possibilities I consider, such as mild nasal vestibulitis, which typically causes redness or pustules rather than firm, white nodules, or, rarely, nasal polyps or HPV-related (human papillomavirus) papillomas. To differentiate between them, I consider the duration of the bumps' presence, whether they have changed, and whether you have any associated symptoms.
Do not squeeze, pick, or pop the bumps, as the area can become infected easily.
Helpful measures include warm steam, saline nasal rinse or spray, and a minimal amount of petroleum jelly applied at the nostril entrance once daily if dryness is a factor.
Avoid using topical acne products inside the nose unless prescribed.
Avoid inserting tools or tweezers.
Fibrous papules generally do not require treatment unless you wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. I may consider options such as excision, laser therapy, or cryotherapy. Milia often clear on their own, but can be safely extracted if needed. If I suspect infection or inflammation at any point, I may prescribe a topical antibiotic.
If the bumps persist for more than four to six weeks without improvement or if there is uncertainty about the diagnosis, an evaluation by an ENT specialist (ear, nose, and throat) or dermatologist is recommended.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
