Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a healthy 45-year-old nonsmoker. My children have had a pretty bad stomach virus which I have now caught. I am feeling nauseous. I have not vomited or had diarrhea yet, but I have felt like I could vomit. I have a prescription for tablet Zofran 4 mg, which I already took yesterday. Unfortunately, it is not helping me with nausea. I still feel quite sick. Is it fine for me to take Gravol in addition to Zofran? At the same time, does Zofran stop vomiting from happening? My current medications are Decxilant (highest dose), tablet Bisoprolol 5 mg for benign PVCs, Wellbutrin, and Marvelon.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your concern in detail and will surely help you out. The nausea is due to the viral infection only. Zofran (Ondansetron) is only an anti-emetic, and 4 mg is a very low dose. So what you need to do is eradicate the cause of nausea, the virus. That can be done with lots of oral fluids. Keep hydrating yourself. The more the water goes in, the faster the virus clears from your system. This process will generally take seven days, but you can cut it short three to four days with lots of water. Now coming to the feeling of nausea, you should take Zofran 8 mg thrice daily. This is the optimal dose. In addition, take tablet Metoclopramide 10 mg thrice daily and tablet Flupentixol and Melitracen combo once at night. This treatment is for five days, and you will be completely fine after. Please continue to take your other medicines like Bisoprolol and OCPs (oral contraceptive pills) as they will not interfere in the treatment of this viral infection. Along with this, take a good antacid like capsule Omeprazole 20 mg twice daily. Gravol (Dimenhydrinate) is a good drug, but it is less effective than Zofran. So please take the medications I suggested. I hope you get fine soon. Please feel free to revert in case of any more doubts.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your detailed answer.

Can I take two Zofran pills at once since they are each 4 mg? If so, then can I take two 4 mg pills every 8 hours? I guess that adds up to 24 mg a day? I was originally told to start with one 4 mg dose, take a second 4 mg dose four hours later, then another 4 mg dose eight hours after the first one. So 8 hours ago, I took one 4 mg dose, and four hours ago, I took one 4 mg dose. So I am due for a 4 mg dose now. What should I do? Should I wait four hours and then take 8 mg since I had 4 mg only four hours ago? How many days can you take the Zofran for? I live in a western country, and I was wondering if Metoclopramide, Flupentixol and Melitracan, and Omeprazole go by other names as I have not heard of them before? I am not sure if I will be able to obtain them or not, but I will try. Thank you so much for your help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your concern in detail and will surely help you out. You can take Zofran 8 mg instantly. Do not worry about the increased dose. Either you can take 4 mg every four hours or 8 mg every 8 hours, which will add the same value. So you can take it as per your comfort. Do not worry. It is safe up to 30 mg. Metoclopramide, Flupentixol, Melitracen, and Omeprazole are generic names and not branded names. I intentionally mentioned the generic names so that you do not face difficulty procuring these medicines. Just go to the pharmacy and ask for these medicines, and you will easily get them. If you are unable to get them, let me know, and I will provide you with alternatives. Our main focus is your health. So let me know if you need more help. I hope this helps. Kindly revert in case of further queries. Thank you.
