Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was in the gym on the Smith machine doing squats. It was my first time doing it, so I was doing it wrong and rested the bar on the back of my neck. After I went home, the area felt numb. I heard that an injury on the back of my neck can lead to severe issues like being paralyzed. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

If you are experiencing numbness in the area where you rested the bar on your neck, you may have compressed or irritated a nerve or caused a muscle strain. If you are concerned about your symptoms, it is best to consult a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or physical therapist. They will be able to evaluate your condition, provide a proper diagnosis, and recommend appropriate treatment if necessary. It is always better to be cautious regarding potential injuries, especially those involving the neck or spine. If you are experiencing numbness in the neck area, apply ice rather than heat in the initial stages of an injury. Ice can help reduce inflammation and numb the area, which may provide temporary relief. You can apply an ice pack wrapped in a thin cloth to the affected area for about 15 to 20 minutes several times. However, it is necessary to avoid direct ice application to the skin to prevent ice burns. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate course of action for your specific situation. They will be able to assess your condition and provide you with personalized advice and recommendations for managing your symptoms.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
