My heart beats fast when I move my neck. Is there a cure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Whenever I move my neck up and down, that is, when I try to touch my mouth to my chest, then suddenly my waist starts vibrating and my heart starts beating as if I am getting an electric shock. So, I want to know-

  1. What kind of treatment will I have to do for this?

  2. Which doctor will I have to consult, and what will be the cost of this?

I do not have insurance. This has been happening to me for about a month or two.

No, earlier there was no such issue; just when I woke up in the morning, I would have mild back pain, or sometimes I would have open pain on either the left or right side when I lay down. There was no other problem. No, I do not take any other medicines for any disease.

Kindly give your suggestions.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand how concerning and uncomfortable this sensation must feel for you, especially when it feels like an electric shock that travels down your body with neck movement.

What you are describing sounds similar to what is known as Lhermitte’s sign, which can occur when there is irritation or compression of the spinal cord, often in the neck region.

This can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as

  1. A vitamin B12 deficiency.

  2. A pinched nerve in the cervical spine.

  3. Cervical spondylosis.

  4. Disc problems.

The best specialist to consult for this problem is a neurologist, as they can evaluate whether the symptom is coming from your spinal cord or nerves.

You will likely need an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan of the cervical spine to check for any nerve compression or structural issues. If that is not possible immediately, a general physician or orthopedic doctor can start the evaluation and refer you further.

The consultation charges with a neurologist can differ and vary. If cost is a concern, you can go to a government hospital or a teaching hospital where the charges are much lower.

Until you are evaluated, try to avoid sudden neck movements, keep good posture, and make sure you are eating a healthy diet that includes vitamin B12 and folate-rich foods.

With proper diagnosis and treatment, most people with this type of symptom improve significantly once the underlying cause is addressed.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
