This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old female with severe neck pain on the right side. I am not able to turn on that side, and it is disturbing my work and everyday activities. How can I get rid of this neck pain? Can exercise help me reduce this pain? How does physiotherapy help in this? Can neck pain occur due to bad posture while working or sleeping in an awkward position?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and can understand your concern.

Severe neck pain, especially when it limits your mobility and affects daily activities, can be very distressing. Herewith sharing the comprehensive overview and also the approach to help alleviate and manage your neck pain:

Causes of Neck Pain:

1. Muscle Strain: Neck pain often results from muscle strain due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or sudden movements.

2. Joint Problems: Issues like osteoarthritis or cervical spondylosis can cause pain and stiffness in the neck.

3. Injury: Accidents or trauma, such as whiplash from a car accident, can lead to neck pain.

4. Degenerative Disk Disease: Wear and tear on the discs between the vertebrae can cause neck pain.

Self-Care and Home Remedies:

1. Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain but do not completely immobilize your neck.

2. Ice and Heat Therapy: Apply ice packs initially to reduce inflammation, then switch to heat packs or warm compresses to relax muscles.

3. Over-the-counter Pain Relief: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation. However, they are only for short-term use.

4. Posture Correction: Pay attention to your posture, especially while working at a desk or using electronic devices. Ensure your workstation is ergonomically set up.

Exercise and Physical Therapy:

1. Neck Exercises: Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help relieve tension and improve flexibility in the neck muscles.

2. Chin Tucks: Gently tuck your chin towards your chest, hold briefly, and repeat.

3. Neck Rotations: Slowly turn your head side to side within a comfortable range of motion.

4. Shoulder Blade Squeezes: Squeeze your shoulder blades together and hold for a few seconds.

5. Physiotherapy: A physical therapist can provide targeted exercises and manual therapy techniques to reduce pain and improve neck mobility. They may also use techniques such as massage, ultrasound therapy, or traction to alleviate symptoms.

Prevention of Neck Pain:

1. Maintain Good Posture: Whether sitting or standing, keep your shoulders back and head aligned with your spine, and avoid slouching.

2. Ergonomic Workstation: Adjust your chair, desk height, and computer monitor to ensure neutral spine alignment.

3. Sleeping Position: Use a supportive pillow that keeps your neck in a neutral position. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it can strain your neck.

4. Regular Breaks: Take breaks from prolonged sitting or repetitive tasks to stretch and change positions.

When to Seek Medical Attention:

1. If your neck pain persists despite home remedies and self-care measures.

2. If you experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or hands.

3. If neck pain is accompanied by fever, headache, or other concerning symptoms.

Addressing neck pain involves a combination of self-care measures, exercises, posture correction, and potentially physical therapy. By adopting these strategies and seeking appropriate medical guidance, you can effectively manage and alleviate your neck pain, restoring comfort and functionality to your daily life.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
