What can I do about loss of response in my right foot?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My right foot has lost its responsiveness. I could barely move my toes, but it is getting better now. I believe I damaged my sural nerve banging it against a table, but it seems to be healing.

Should I be worried?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Loss of movement in your toes after a direct impact could be due to temporary nerve injury (neuropraxia) or soft tissue swelling compressing the nerve. The sural nerve mainly affects sensation along the outer foot and ankle, so if movement was concerned, other nerves like the tibial or peroneal branches may have been involved as well.

Nerve bruises often recover in days to weeks if the nerve was not cut or severely damaged. Gradual return of movement and sensation is a good sign.

Seek medical review if you notice:

  1. Persistent weakness beyond two to three weeks.

  2. Numbness or tingling that is not improving.

  3. Foot drop, or inability to lift toes or ankle.

  4. Swelling, redness, or severe pain.

Take rest and avoid re-injury. Do gentle range-of-motion exercises once pain allows. Avoid prolonged pressure on the injured area. If symptoms worsen, consult a neurologist or orthopedic specialist for a physical examination and possibly nerve conduction studies. If you would like, I can provide you with a brief home-based nerve recovery exercise plan that helps improve foot sensation and muscle strength without overexertion. This will support healing while you monitor progress.

I hope this answers your query. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
