Why does someone at 30 with NMOSD develop balance problems?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 30 years old, and before they figured out I had NMOSD (neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder), I kept losing my balance for no reason. I did trip over nothing or just suddenly feel unsteady while walking. Everyone kept saying it was stress or maybe an inner ear thing. Looking back, I cannot believe those were the first signs.

Did anybody else have balance problems way before getting diagnosed?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

I am sorry you went through that experience. Balance problems can occur in people with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder because the condition can affect parts of the brain and spinal cord that help control movement and coordination.

Some people report having the following symptoms:

  1. Episodes of unsteadiness.

  2. Frequent tripping.

  3. Difficulty walking before they receive a diagnosis.

While others have different early symptoms, such as the following:

  1. Vision changes.

  2. Numbness.

However, everyone's experience with NMOSD (neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder) is different, so not everyone will have balance issues before diagnosis. It is understandable to look back and connect those early symptoms now that you know the cause.

Sharing your experience may help others recognize similar patterns, but it is important to remember that balance problems can also have many other causes, so they should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Keeping track of symptom timing, triggers, and severity can be useful for your healthcare professional during follow-up consultations and treatment planning going forward.

So please try to follow up if you feel this answer would be helpful for you.

And I hope you will feel better soon.

Thank you.
