Why does my baby's head shape appear flat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need some advice on my baby's head shape. The head is flat, and she likes to sleep on her side. Would you please tell me about this? I have attached few pictures for you to understand better.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for writing in, and I understand your concern. From what I can see here (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) the shape seems fine. Would you please mention the age of your child? Generally, the newborn head shapes are in different forms and all these are normal. You have to monitor if the head circumference growth is average, which is 32 to 35 cm at birth. After that, it should typically grow at the rate of 2 cm in the first three months and after that 1 cm and followed by different rates at different months till one year by which time a total of 12 cm growth is to be recorded.

I hope this helps you.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

My child is two months old now. I am sorry for not mentioning it earlier.

Regards.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

That is alright, and you need not apologize. For a two-month-old, head shapes are in various forms. Please keep monitoring the head circumference, as I have suggested. Also, follow up on her weight and other growth parameters.

Thank you.
