How can people with night shift manage sleep better?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I work the night shift at my company, and the plant runs 24/7, with our shifts changing every month. My sleep schedule is a mess, and I have always been a light sleeper since childhood. I am a 45-year-old man and recently heard a doctor on television talking about circadian rhythms and sleep physiology. It got me thinking about how I can better cope with my situation. I have read that our circadian rhythm is our body's natural sleep-wake cycle, and disrupting it can lead to long-term health issues. How can people like me manage our sleep better when we have such irregular work hours? I have tried different things, but nothing seemed to work well.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Follow a few instructions mentioned below:

  1. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule even on days off.
  2. Make your sleep environment as dark as possible.
  3. Keep your sleep environment cool, as a lower temperature can promote better sleep.
  4. Develop a relaxing pre-sleep routine to signal your body that it is time to sleep. This could include reading, listening to calming music, or taking a warm bath.
  5. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants several hours before your sleep time.
  6. Increase exposure to bright light during your work shift to stay alert.
  7. Minimize exposure to bright lights and screens at least an hour before sleep
  8. Short naps during breaks at work can help reduce sleep debt.
  9. Maintain a balanced diet and avoid heavy meals close to your sleep time.
  10. Regular physical activity can improve sleep quality,
  11. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
