How to manage norovirus during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am seven months pregnant and just caught norovirus from my toddler. I have been vomiting for 36 hours and can barely keep water down. How dangerous is this for my baby? When should I go to the emergency room? Are there any safe medications I can take while pregnant? I am worried about getting dehydrated and harming the baby.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Norovirus itself does not cause damage to the fetus, but the stress that you are going through and dehydration may cause preterm labor, which is dangerous. Now, note a few things. Stay at home and get a good rest. Maintain good hygiene, like handwashing, before preparing food and after using the washroom. But it is best not to prepare food if you are infectious. Drink sips of water and electrolyte-containing solution. Take ORS (oral rehydration solution) frequently to prevent dehydration. For vomiting, you cannot take all types of medication, but you can take Pyridoxine and Doxylamine or a combination, which is safe. Eat bland or easily digestible foods like toast, crackers, and rice. Do not eat fatty, spicy foods. Now, the point is if you cannot take orally, then you must seek medical attention to receive IV (intravenous) fluids. And another thing is if you face signs of dehydration like dry mouth, decreased urine, and dizziness, then immediately go to the emergency room.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me assist you further.

Thank you.
