What are the ways to prevent contracting a norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old male college student living in a dorm. I had a bad stomach virus a few days ago with vomiting and diarrhea, and now I am finally able to eat again. I live in a dorm with shared bathrooms and kitchens, and I am worried about getting sick again or spreading it to my roommates. How long can norovirus stay on surfaces, and what is the best way to disinfect my room? Is there anything I can do to boost my immunity so I do not catch it again if it is going around my dorm?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Norovirus can stay on surfaces for days to weeks if not cleaned properly.

I suggest you follow the below-mentioned instructions:

To disinfect your room:

  1. Use bleach-based cleaners (one part bleach to nine parts water) on surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and bathroom areas.

  2. Wash bedding, towels, and clothes in hot water.

  3. Clean your phone, laptop, and shared kitchen items with disinfectant wipes.

  4. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, as hand sanitizer is not very effective.

For boosting immunity and preventing reinfection:

  1. Stay hydrated and eat nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

  2. Get enough sleep to help your body recover.

  3. Take probiotics, such as yogurt or fermented foods, to restore gut health.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
