Why am I still tired and dizzy after a norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently got infected with norovirus, and the symptoms are lasting longer than expected. I had vomiting and diarrhea, but now I am just constantly tired and dizzy.

  • Is it normal to have such long fatigue from norovirus?

  • Can it mess with your immune system or gut balance long-term?

  • I am nervous because I live with an older family. How long should I isolate?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear you are still feeling unwell after your norovirus infection. While the acute symptoms of norovirus, such as vomiting and diarrhea, typically last twenty-four to seventy-two hours, it is not uncommon for fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and even mild digestive upset to linger for up to one to two weeks, especially if you experienced dehydration or a significant disruption to your gut microbiome.

Norovirus does not usually cause lasting immune damage, but it can temporarily disrupt the balance of gut flora, which plays a key role in energy levels, digestion, and immune response. This disruption may explain your ongoing fatigue and dizziness. Supporting your recovery with hydration, electrolyte replenishment, light nutrition, rest, and possibly probiotics can help you regain strength.

Regarding isolation:

  • Norovirus is highly contagious and can still be shed in stool for up to two weeks after symptoms resolve, even if you feel better.

  • That said, the highest risk of transmission is during active symptoms and the forty-eight hours after your last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.

  • To protect your older family members, continue practicing strict hygiene, frequent handwashing, disinfecting surfaces with bleach-based cleaners, and avoiding food preparation for others for at least three days after symptoms stop.

If your fatigue continues to worsen or new symptoms develop, a follow-up with your health care provider would be recommended to rule out dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, or secondary issues like post-viral fatigue.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
