Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was infected with norovirus about 10 days ago, and I am still experiencing stomach cramps and difficulty eating normally. Although I have not had any blood in my stool, I continue to feel weak and lightheaded. Can norovirus lead to long-term digestive issues, or are these symptoms just part of the normal recovery process?
Should I get a stool test at this point, or is it better to wait it out? Also, is it still possible to be contagious more than a week after infection? What are the safest foods to eat right now to avoid upsetting my stomach further?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Norovirus is a highly contagious, self-limiting viral infection that can easily spread within a household from a single infected individual. Typically, symptoms last for about four to five days, though in some cases they may extend up to 10 to 12 days. A person infected with norovirus can remain contagious for approximately 10 days after symptoms resolve.
The symptoms you are experiencing may be part of the convalescent phase (the recovery period), during which the digestive system is still healing. Norovirus can occasionally lead to long-term gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, nausea, and diarrhea. These symptoms can mimic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If your symptoms persist for more than four weeks, it is advisable to consult a gastrointestinal (GI) specialist for further evaluation.
Advice:
Stay hydrated with oral rehydration solution (ORS) and increase fluid intake. Avoid sugary drinks. Coconut water can help if there’s an electrolyte imbalance.
You may take anti-emetics like Ondansetron for nausea and vomiting (under medical guidance).
For persistent diarrhea, Loperamide (Imodium) can be considered short-term.
Anti-spasmodic medications such as Dicyclomine (Cyclopam) may help relieve abdominal cramping.
Eat easily digestible foods such as plain rice, clear soups, dry toast, and soft fruits like bananas or applesauce.
Include probiotic-rich foods like yogurt to support the restoration of healthy gut flora.
Rest and consume well-cooked, home-prepared meals to avoid further digestive upset.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
