Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had norovirus last week, and while I am no longer throwing up, I still have diarrhea and feel weak. I have been drinking electrolytes, but I do not feel back to normal yet. How long does it usually take to fully recover from this? Is there anything else I can do to get my strength back faster?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Norovirus infection is self-limiting, and symptoms recover within a week. Sometimes weakness can persist for seven to ten days which gradually normalizes. If you notice any reappearance of symptoms within a few days, it could be post-norovirus IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). You may notice diarrhea, nausea, bloating, discomfort, etc. Then you can consult your physician for the same.
Advice:
Maintain hydration with increased fluid intake and/or ORS (oral rehydration solution) as you still have diarrhea and weakness.
Eat easy-to-digest food items like soups, rice, and fruits.
Once diarrhea subsides, you can start multivitamin supplements for your weakness.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
